This blog entry is for two maps: 5/21and 5/28. I am happy to report that I am starting to do better. Small improvements, but they are happening. I am much more aware of my purchases and I was able to go to the Farmers Market this week! My bright orange SNAP tokens didn’t stretch very far, but I feel much better about these choices. Several of my food sourcing efforts were pretty easy this week thanks to some good websites, the farmer’s market, & Momma and Poppa Fay, but I did have to make a few calls. Again, all my conversations all went just about the same way: I was on hold for a while, there was a lot of furious typing on the computer, uncomfortable chuckle from the customer service representative and then…. tentatively at first, gaining confidence as they spoke- all products are... MADE IN THE USA. I’m not quite sure why this is a point of pride. They truly couldn’t tell me anything else even when I provided the barcode.
These maps aren’t as full as they should be and I apologize- On the 14th many of my foods I had to place in the Bermuda triangle because I don’t have packages for them. On the 21st I didn’t eat very much because I spent part of the day on the boat with my parents drugged up on Dramamine and the rest of the day was travel and sleep to recover.
This year of local food actions while living at the poverty line is making me think a lot. And I like it. I feel sometimes like I am living some of KB’s lessons from the Local Food ABCs. It’s hard and sometimes it makes my head hurt, but I love that this is happening as part of a compact. And so to you, dear friends of the LPF compact, I say thank you. I am also much more aware of how thankful I am for growing up in a village surrounded by local farms, working in and eating from a giant backyard garden with great cooks for parents. Lots of thinking happening these two weeks folks. Actions around these thoughts coming soon.
